How Can We Help?

1099- What is TIN Matching?

We offer an optional feature as part of our 1099 form preparation service called TIN Matching.

This is where we submit the Recipient’s name and their EIN or SSN you provide and see if it matches what is in the IRS records. TIN matching can take 24 – 48 hours with the IRS. After this time, we can check the results to see if the TIN Match was accepted or rejected.

The benefits of this service are:

  • match the payee name and TIN with IRS records;
  • decrease backup withholding and penalty notices from the IRS; and
  • reduce the error rate in TIN validation.

We can offer this service at any time up to 3 business days prior to the 1099 form deadline prior to e-filing your 1099 forms.

If a TIN Match is rejected, there is an error with the tax ID provided by the recipient or the name does not exactly match IRS records for that tax ID.  In this case, it is best practice to request a new W-9 form from your recipient and run a new TIN Match.

You can still e-file 1099 forms without conducting a TIN Match or if TIN Matching was rejected but you may get a letter from the IRS in the future.
